The ability to control and read out magnetic states by electrical currents underpins modern sensing and data-storage technologies. This capability relies on nonequilibrium spin and orbital currents, which mediate the transfer of angular momentum between neighbouring materials. Decoupling these currents from the flow of electronic charge opens new avenues for electrical control of magnetization in all classes of materials, including metals, insulators, ferromagnets, and antiferromagnets, on short temporal and spatial scales. This talk will discuss the generation, transport, and absorption of angular momentum in magnetic heterostructures, presenting recent experimental results and highlighting open questions in the understanding of these phenomena. Finally, I will discuss quantum control of individual spins by electrical currents, highlighting the advantages and limitations of using local current injection to perform quantum operations on single and coupled qubits.
