Getting close to the sun

Solar Orbiter beim fly by an der Venus, 9. August 2021 (ESA)

In February 2020, a new space mission was launched. Its goal is to understand how the heliosphere is formed and sustained.

To do this, it will get in close to the Sun (a third of the distance between the Sun and Earth, just inside the orbit of Mercury), and will slowly increase its inclination to allow the first view of the solar poles. In order to achieve this, it uses flybys of Venus and the Earth to achieve this challenging orbit.

The mission is currently in cruise phase. I will describe the science goals, and the observing plans for the future.
